[Magic Mondays] The Hexproof Open: A Gamers Helping Gamers Charity Tourney

MY co,umn about Magic: The Gahtering(Sorry this is late, its been a busy week and the con crud isn’t helping.)

As you know, Rei and I went to The Escapist Expo this weekend. She’s got a full break down of the weekend over at Gaming Is Life. I’m just going to look at the tourney.

My Deck list:

I chickened out on Stuffy Doll and played a WG Flicker Deck…it went pretty well for something I only get a couple hours of tuning on. Sadly most of the mana base is cycling, so I’m not sure what to do with it from here. I was really counting on Birds in Ravnica.

4x Sunpetal Grove
4x Razorverge Thicket
8x Forest
8x Plains
3x Thragtusk
4x Restoration Angel
4x Champion of Lambholt
4x Strangleroot Giest
3x Giest Honored Monk
2x Fiend Hunter
3x Birds of Paradise
2x Llanowar Elves
2x Avacyn’s Pilgrim
2x Genesis Wave
2x Rancor
2x Oblivion Ring
3x Garruk, Primal Hunter

So then, the rounds. I ended up 2-5, which is pretty bad.

Round 1

I played against someone playing Planeswalker Permission. Game 1, the deck was working well. I really looked like I would win, until Karn hit. Then it was pretty much game over by time he dropped Nicol Bolas a couple turns later, I hung in until he ulted Nicol around turn 17. At that point I scooped. Game two was a blow out with an early whip flare strangling my deck and Olivia Voldaren eating my other creatures.

Round 2

Mono red Goblins. Was in a bad mind space, deck didn’t work. Lost hard.

Round 3

Guy was playing the BG Event Deck from DKA. Won two, good to know I can build better than a precon…

Round 4

Loss to Delver. Incredibly frustrating because the guy was super serious.

Round 5

Mono Black Zombies. Went 2-1 with a crazy come from behind in game three. At one life I drop a Thragtusk and then Fiend Hunter to remove his Obliterator. Proceed to tick garruk up for a win just before time

Round 6

Lost to Titan Ramp. Was a cool deck to see nonetheless since it will likely never be Standard legal agian.

Round 7

Lost to Red Shrine. Total blow out, spent the whole round doing nothing beyond watching creatures blow up for six turns before taking two loaded shrines to the face.

All in all, I’m not sure Standard is for me–or at least this Standard wasn’t. I had figured GW aggro could race most things, but time and again gut shot and whip flare ruined me. Cubed with judges after the event and that was awesome also got Jon Finkel to sign my Restoration Angel playset. Looking forward to Return to Ravnica and new opportunities.

‘Til next time!

  1. All about believing in the heart of the cards. :O

Side note, I know what you mean about losing to someone who is super serious during a card game. It makes you want to win even more.

  2. should rep the elves with somberwald sage, 3 turn Thragtusk or Monk is a game winner

    • Oh yeah! That’s not too bad an idea either.

I really need to get this loaded into Cockatrice and get playing so I can figure out whether the Champion is worth all the set up to run or not.
